biography

Being brought up in a house where music genres as varied as Kate Bush, Rachmaninov and Abba were frequently played may well have influenced her gift for melody. Piano lessons ensued and it was not long before she was playing pieces by ear and improvising Rachmaninov herself. She would forego sleep to sit by the record player and listen quietly to her favourite female singers when everyone else was in bed. Hours were spent on the piano singing and playing, much to the disturbance of the peace to her three other siblings!

Citing her childhood family holidays she says, "When I was growing up, we used to take these long journeys to Southern France. All six of us would be crammed into the car, together with the tent and bedding, and I would just want to sing, so I'd wind down the window and be singing into the wind on the motorway! My poor family putting up with me!"

With this love for music, it was only a natural progression to songwriting for Joy with her first song being penned at 11. Her songwriting gifts were first acknowledged publicly, when the school choir sung her compositions at concerts and she regularly gave solo performances. At the age of 18, Joy toured the eastern coasts of Canada & the USA with highly regarded choirs. The tours included appearances on U.S. television and radio.
